As I shared in my post about learning to sing better, music is a big part of my life. Worship is very important to me and I enjoy many creative ways to worship. But, singing has been a passion of mine since I was a small child, making up my own songs. Now, I still have melodies on my heart and write lyrics, but have never learned an instrument well enough to play the music that is in my head. Secretly, I want to learn music production. This has been a secret frustration of mine for a very long time, as you might imagine. I can sing the melodies I write, of course, but recording and composing the music for the instruments has been challenging and cost prohibitive.
So, long story short, I was (again) describing my challenge to one of my sons and unknowing of my secret, he suggested I look into music production. But, my heart sank. How much would that cost and who would I get to do that? Uggh.
Skeptical, I investigated some of the homeschool online class providers to see if maybe they might have something like that. I knew that Mr. D Math was known to have unusual interest-based classes and thought maybe he might have something for those who want to learn music production. Well, he does! Hey, you don’t have to be a teen (or even a homeschooler) to want to learn music production!
A top choice if you want to learn music production
Taught by an expert
The first thing about Mr. D. Math Digital Music Production that impressed me was the instructor. This isn’t an amateur musician who produces music in his spare time. No, this guy is a big league music producer, creating the sound trailers for popular movies such as Hawkeye and Black Panther, and for video games. The professional video quality of the course really enhances the instruction. It helps organize and clarify the lessons, plus, the super crisp images make everything easy to understand. An added bonus that teens would like (me, too) was he did not talk down to the student or spend too much time on super basic information.
Learn music production through projects
If you’ve been reading my blogs, you know I’m a huge fan of project-based learning for teens and kids. Well, even for myself, I simply learn better if I can apply what I’m learning immediately. Mr. D Math Digital Music Production doesn’t disappoint. Through the sixteen lessons, the instructor takes the student through the three stages of production–composition/recording, mixing, and mastering–using a computer, microphone, and downloaded software. However, he also talks about additional equipment that can take music production to the next level.
And, students apply the lessons to their own compositions, so they can practice right away. At the end of Mr. D Math Digital Music Production, they have a mastered work of sound art! There’s a lot packed in to the lessons, so I recommend taking your time working through the course. And, as I’ve had to do, watch the videos a second time when starting a new project. And, while I could learn music production with the lessons provided, it takes practice to become really good at this, just like with any instrument. So, students should keep this in mind. I have committed myself to creating a new composition every month to practice and improve my skills.
Fuel a passion, give elective credit
For me, the Mr. D Math Digital Music Production course fuels a passion and gives me a means to create music that I can’t otherwise play. I can apply musical theory and knowledge and create something pleasing with just my computer and a microphone. My younger son has also shown an interest in these lessons, since he plays drums and would love to add the other instruments to his. Who knows? Maybe with practice, it might become a great side gig for both of us. At any rate, Mr. D Math Digital Music Production is a one semester elective credit course that might just be the ticket to inspiring and motivating your teen. I found it to be super helpful to taking my musical abilities to the next level. Your teen (or you!) might agree!
