Imagine if an online chemistry course allowed you to visualize atomic orbits and bonds and connected the science to everyday things. Would that transform your view of chemistry? It has for me.
You see, when I was in college, I really wanted to major in Biology, not Psychology. I settled for a minor in Biology instead. The reason for the compromise? Chemistry. I was deathly afraid of Organic Chemistry. My fear stemmed from my high school struggles with it. First, I never understood the math. Second, I couldn’t visualize all those orbits and, being a visual learner, that was vital to my understanding. To tell you the truth, I don’t know how I got a decent grade. The teacher probably graded on a curve.
Well, now I’m going back to school for a doctorate and guess what? I need a chemistry course as a co-requisite! It’s been a long time since high school and I want to excel in my college course. So, I thought it might be fun to do a little refresher. I remembered that my oldest son took a highly visual online chemistry course that really impressed me. So, I returned to the course he took with Fascinating Education to re-acquaint myself with the long feared science. In addition, his younger brother is now entering high school and so, we can take Chemistry together!
Why I Love Fascinating Education‘s Online Chemistry Course
First, my oldest son enjoyed Fascinating Education’s online chemistry course because he is a visual spatial learner with severe dyslexia. He needed a program without a lot of writing, but that still had knowledge checks. He also needed a course that used lots of images, not a lecture format or textbook. No slides with lots of text. And that’s exactly what he got. This course only uses images with Dr. Margulies speaking in a clear, well-paced manner about the images shown. My younger son took a look at it and he nodded his approval. He doesn’t much like text-based or lecture format, either. For me, this highly visual online chemistry course has helped me finally understand chemistry!
Math is at the end
Remember that I said the math in chemistry tripped me up in high school? Well, Dr. Margulies recognized that many students would progress just fine through the material until they got to the math problems. So, as much as possible, he moved the math to the end of the units instead of leaving it interspersed. That way, students don’t get frustrated by the math and can focus on the chemistry. This means that the flow of the lessons isn’t interrupted. I love that he did this so it’s less intimidating.
Mastery focused online chemistry course
Fascinating Education courses in general are self-paced and mastery focused, so they’re not about scope and sequence as much as they’re about giving teens a deep understanding of the subject matter. If you’re like me and you care more about making scientific principles accessible to students than about standards and curricula, this is the course for your family. After all, these courses are solid science courses taught by a neurologist who loves helping kids understand science and how it relates to their world. Just add in your own lab activities if you wish or if your state requires it. But, it does stand on it’s own without the labs.
