Homeschooling and Church Life

Sometimes homeschooling and church life are at odds with each other. Other times, we need a little guidance with how to navigate church life when our children aren’t interested in the same things as the others at church youth group. Or, we wonder if our efforts to shield them from certain things will be undone by kids in Sunday School. Where do find answers for our unique issues? Well, Julie Naturally offers some insight about homeschooling and church life from her experiences in two different churches. She also offers Bible study, encouraging tips, and more.

Gift Free Christmas: Some Favorite Ideas

November 15, 2021 by Julie Polanco

When my children were small, having a gift free Christmas didn’t seem possible. We did limit the number of gifts so they never expected a shower of gifts on Christmas morning. With four children and a limited budget, this was a necessity. But, now that they are older (and all the cousins are, too), it’s …

Don’t do this for Bible memory. Adjust your focus.

February 25, 2019 by Julie Polanco

I really hate giving kids prizes for Bible memory. I usually get puzzled looks from people when I say this. After all, prizes are a major motivator in school, at home, and in church. The argument for this usually goes like this, “Well, they won’t do it if we don’t give a prize.” Why wouldn’t …

December 14, 2018 by Julie Polanco

Should Homeschoolers Participate in Church Youth Group? Recently, I listened to a conversation happening among millennials sitting next to me at church. I wasn’t snooping as they eventually asked me a few questions to involve me in their discussion. But their observations and conclusions struck me. They knew my children and they knew a few …

Teaching Your Children about Jesus: The Amazing Power of Your Living Testimony

November 21, 2018 by Julie Polanco

Many, many Bible curricula promise that our children will know and love Jesus and his Word if we use their program. We also diligently take our children to Sunday School, and maybe we discuss the day’s lesson afterward. Some of us may do morning devotions as a family as well. While there’s nothing wrong with …

Pros and Cons of Vacation Bible School: Surprising Considerations

July 31, 2018 by Julie Polanco

It’s time for vacation Bible school, or VBS, as we commonly call it. Many of us participate in this summer camp type experience, either as volunteers or as participants. While I wholeheartedly believe in community outreach and teaching the Gospel, I do not always send my children to VBS. Why not? Here are some pros …

Help! How to Deal with a Pastor Who Hates Homeschooling

May 9, 2017 by Julie Polanco

I never thought that I’d have to deal with churches persecuting homeschoolers when I first started out. Boy, was I wrong. I had never heard of a pastor who hates homeschooling. I thought that the church would be especially friendly to homeschoolers. And many are.  When I first started homeschooling, the pastor of my church …
